After almost two years without an agreement, the city and the firefighters union will have their contractual differences reviewed by an arbitrator, starting in March.
The firefighters have been without a new contract since Dec. 31, 1990, and the meetings that will lead to binding arbitration will start March 1, according to Dave Kehn, union president.
"During the first year of negotiations, the city intended to develop a two-tier system with new hires receiving reduced salaries and a reduced benefit package," said Kehn on Friday. "That's real difficult for a unit of men who are supposed to be a brotherhood." …
